The Slight Edge + How It Inspired Me to Bring Baby Ducks to a Festival
I was nervous I would get in trouble for showing up with live animals, but the results were worth it.
The Slight Edge
This week, I finished the Slight Edge.
It is my favorite book I have read during Praxis.
Its core message is that doing small self-improving actions will, over time, compound and lead you to massive success and happiness. Unfortunately, it also works the other way around: small errors in judgment can over time compound into failure and misery.
I found the Slight Edge relieving, actually, because I often get frustrated when things aren't moving fast enough in my business, especially with social media.
A lot of the Instagram coaches that I follow on Instagram create posts like “How to get 30K followers in 30 days.” It can be frustrating to see that paired with my own “slow” growth.
The Slight Edge has helped me realize that success doesn’t happen overnight. Even though I might not see the growth I want to, if I keep showing up daily, the breakthrough will come.
The people who have gained massive growth in a short amount of time, no doubt, had lots of failures and hard work that preceded their success.
I have been able to see that myself with the markets I sell at.
It can sometimes seem like growth is slow. It can be hard to go through the rejection that sales inevitably bring, and come home with less than I’d hoped.
What I have noticed over time, though, is that even though there was not a specific breakthrough point, my skill at sales, combined with building a local following, has been compounding. 😁
The Rabbit Fest
This week, I have two festivals going on. One is a local fair with carnival rides, etc., and the other is an air show. I have successfully convinced my twin to sell at the air show for me while I do the festival since I haven’t figured out how to bilocate(yet 😂).
One big thing I learned from this festival was a lesson in dealing with the cards you are dealt. I got dealt bad cards.
My booth was assigned as the last booth in a corner area of the festival. Not good.
Fortunately, I had some time between the initial setup and when the festival started. So, I went home and brainstormed how to attract people to my booth.
There is a story in the Slight Edge where the author had a table at a business show, and the booth across from him had big bear balloons. That got me thinking, “It is the Rabbit Fest, I could find some rabbit balloons. Well, the store might not have rabbit balloons, maybe duck balloons? Wait! I could take the ducklings + goslings!”
Fortunately, we have baby ducks + geese at the moment, and since I had an end booth, I had some extra space to put a little enclosure. Bingo.
I was a little nervous about taking them, because I thought that one of the festival managers might get mad at me for bringing live animals + not having the enclosure in my 10x10 space (I hate getting in trouble), but I also knew that sometimes you gotta take risks.
I am so glad I did because it made a big impact on how many people I attracted by having live ducklings right in front of my booth. Don’t know why I’ve never done that before….
Hope you have a great weekend!
God Bless,
Serena
